About Us

Emma Hitt Nichols and Chrystie Leonard

Nascent Medical, LLC, is co-owned by a couple of ladies shown here with aprons on for once. In this picture we were making a “Tuscan date night” meal of seared scallops with arugula and hazelnut-chocolate stuffed donuts (our dear husbands are helping but not shown).

Chrystie Leonard (left) has a background in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry in multiple roles and handles the financial side of the business. Dr. Emma Hitt Nichols (right) has been a medical writer for a very long time and runs the operations side.

We are proud of this business we have going here and the value add we bring to our many clients. It started with Emma as a one-person shop around 2000, and in 2015, transitioned from Hitt Medical Writing, LLC, to Nascent Medical, LLC, after Chrystie and Emma partnered up. Our goal is to continue to grow the company and serve as many clients as possible.

We look forward to serving you!

Are you looking for medical writers you can trust with a proven track record of meeting deadlines?

When your medical education company or med comms agency secures a significant project from a pharmaceutical client, it’s certainly cause for celebration. However, the reality of fulfilling that project can quickly set in.

Why gamble with uncertain medical writing assistance when the profitability and reputation of your company are at stake?

We understand the challenges that arise when winning a new project without having the necessary medical writing staff to execute it.
The last thing you want is to hire additional employees, only to have to let them go when things slow down. Moreover, your existing staff may lack the specific therapeutic expertise required.

And let’s face it, thoroughly vetting freelance medical writers can be time-consuming and risky.

At Nascent Medical, we have an extensive pool of
on-call MD- and PhD-level writers ready to assist you with your projects. Our team comprises over 90 experienced, native-English speaking medical writers who collectively possess a wealth of experience and therapeutic knowledge in areas such as oncology, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rare diseases, and many others.

But that’s not all. We take care of matching our medical writers to your project, alleviating any worries on your end. With an in-depth understanding of our writers’ backgrounds and expertise, we save you time and spare you the anxiety of selecting the perfect medical writer for your project.

Getting started with us is simple. Just use the get estimate form to provide a brief project description, deadline, and any budget considerations you may have. During business hours, we’ll respond within minutes with an estimate. When we provide the estimate, we’ll already be thinking about who the best match from our team would be, ensuring a seamless start once you approve.

If you prefer,
schedule a quick call with us.

Rest assured that when you collaborate with our medical writers, your project is in capable hands. Our track record of
over 20 years of helping our clients speaks for itself, with most clients returning repeatedly, specifically requesting writers they’ve previously worked with.

Your satisfaction is our priority. While we fully expect you to be 100% satisfied with our work, we offer complimentary revisions within the initial scope of the project. We provide transparent pricing options up front, including flat rates or hourly rates with predefined caps, ensuring no unpleasant surprises when you receive your invoice.

If you’d like, you also have the opportunity to schedule a call with your assigned writer before commencing the project. Our aim is to make the entire process as stress-free as possible for you. We also do medical editing, annotations, and factchecking.

We know that the initial joy of winning a project can quickly transform into a mountain of stress once the work begins. It’s no fun to receive an irritated email from your client due to missing a deadline or receiving poor-quality work. By working with our experienced and reliable writers, we help you avoid that.

FAQs

Pricing Questions

Our pricing is within the range of industry standards for freelance medical writers, even though we provide a significant value add compared to working with a single freelancer. If you have a budget or amount in mind, please let us know. We can work with a flat rate, or for longer, more complex projects, we can work with an hourly rate with an hours estimate provided up front.

A. Unfortunately no. We pay our writers individually for the work they do. However, we can coordinate multiple writers on larger projects, usually at no extra charge.

A. We include revisions within the initial scope of the project. We want you to be happy with the work received. If the scope of the project starts extending beyond the initial agreement, we will need to discuss additional pricing.

A. Not usually. That’s part of our value add. It may be necessary to offer a higher amount to attract a writer willing to work on your project under an extremely tight deadline, but we will let you know up front.

Timing Questions

A. Yes. We can assign multiple writers on projects and can meet tight deadlines. We are good like that!

Questions About Project Types

A. If it’s writing, and it’s about a medical topic, then the answer is most likely going to be yes. Our team of writers is large, and every project is a perfect fit for one or more of our writers.

A. Yes. Our focus is medical, but we can write about any topic in the life sciences, such as biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and laboratory methods.

A. The short answer is yes, but whether we can accommodate your request will depend on the availability of the writers on our team who can do that specialized type of writing.

A. You do, and we’ll sign a statement of work to that effect.

Writer Selection Questions

A. You will have access to a bio once we assign the writer if you’d like. We know a lot about each writer and who will do the best job on which project. We have a proprietary method that we use to achieve the best match and will do this part for you.

A. Absolutely! We consider this the surest sign that our writer did an excellent job for you. If that writer is not available, we are happy to accommodate you with one of our other excellent writers.

A. We never want you to be unhappy, and if it takes another writer to complete a project, then we’ll accomodate on a case-by-case basis. All projects go through a careful quality control review by an experienced medical writer, so our clients are typically extremely pleased with the work received. Our policy is to do whatever it takes to achieve the highest level of quality.

We have an extensive training program for MDs, PhDs, PharmDs, and other people with advanced science degrees, who want to transition into medical writing. We select the very best writers from that program, and by the time they get to work with our clients, they will have written several pieces. We are therefore extremely familiar with their writing ability as well as their work ethic and ability to interact professionally. It takes a tremendous effort to complete our training program. Only a select few get through. All of our writers have gone through this program before they start with us. We’ve found this vetting process works well and produces excellent results.

A. If an appropriate sample is available for the writer that we select, then we may be able to provide it; however, this creates an additional time burden for you as well as us; we have done the vetting of our writers already–that’s part of our value add and we hope you’ll trust our judgement.

Questions About Working With Your Writer

A. Your contract will be with Nascent and your project terms should be shared with us and not our writer. Once the project is underway and your writer has been assigned, we encourage sharing any project details directly with your writer. Do feel free to cc us on emails though. This helps us keep a track of our projects for best results.

A. Absolutely! We consider this one of the surest signs that they did an excellent job for you and want that to happen again and again.

A. When you really like one of our writers, we understand the impetus just to go directly to that writer with future work; however, our writers know to forward your requests to us as per their subcontracting agreement with us. Projects with that writer are required to continue to go through Nascent. On the other hand, if you would like to hire that writer as a remote staff member, do feel free to bring that up with them. Some of our clients have found excellent team members that way.

A.  Sure. We ask that you copy us when emailing the writer so that we can stay in the loop. If needed, our writers can also get on a call with you.

A. We understand that it is helpful to have a highly qualified writer on a call with your client, but the less you can use our writer’s time that way, the more time they can spend on the writing.

A. That type of writer would not last long around here, and we do not receive this complaint. Occasionally our emails go to spam, so if you are not hearing back from any of us immediately during business hours, then do please check your spam folder.
